How square foot gardening works
- 1
Grid the bed into 1 ft squares
A 4 × 4 ft bed holds 16 squares. Mark them with string or slats so each square is planted on its own.
- 2
Plant by count, not by row
Each crop gets a set number per square: 1 for big plants like tomatoes and peppers, 4 for lettuce, 9 for spinach and beets, 16 for carrots and radishes.
- 3
Grow climbers up
Peas, pole beans, cucumbers and small melons go on a trellis on the side where they shade nothing else, so they take less ground.
- 4
Replant square by square
When a square is harvested, add compost and plant the next crop there, so the bed keeps producing all season.
Where the counts come from
Each count is the value most of these sources give; where they disagree, the range is shown with the crop.
