Asian Stir-Fry Garden
An 8×4 wok garden: snow peas, gai lan, bok choy, tatsoi, mizuna, ginger, and Thai basil — dinner in twenty minutes from bed to plate.
About This Template
Everything in this bed is chosen for the wok — quick-cooking, quick-growing, and mostly harvestable as whole young plants. The north edge works vertically: a curtain of snow peas and yard-long beans climbing shared netting. Beside them, the cooking brassicas — gai lan (Chinese broccoli), bok choy, and napa cabbage — planted in a double rank because stir-fry consumes them whole. The third row is the fast-turnover section: dense blocks of tatsoi, mizuna, komatsuna, baby pak choi, and mustard greens that go from sowing to skillet in five weeks, plus garlic chives and shiso on the ends. The front row grows the aromatics that make it taste right: bunching onions, real ginger, cilantro, and Thai basil. Sow the greens in fortnightly batches and the wok never waits.
Benefits
- 1Most crops here go from seed to stir-fry in five to seven weeks
- 2Whole-plant harvests free squares fast for relentless resowing
- 3Snow peas and yard-long beans crop for months on one trellis
- 4Ginger, scallions, and Thai basil cover the aromatic base of the cuisine
- 5Asian brassicas tolerate cool weather that stalls ordinary summer crops
Growing Tips
- 1Sow the greens blocks every two weeks — small batches, constant supply
- 2Harvest bok choy whole at fist size for the sweetest ribs
- 3Start ginger indoors from a sprouting store rhizome; it needs a warm launch
- 4Cut garlic chives to the base; they return thicker every time
