About This Template

Planned backwards from the jar: everything here is a proven pickling crop, planted in the quantities preserving actually demands. Two pickling cucumber hills — the short, thin-skinned type bred for the crock — dominate the north half, with a quartet of dill plants beside them timed to flower exactly when the cucumbers arrive, because dill heads matter more than dill leaves in a pickle jar. The root row supplies the rest of the brine bench: snappy carrots, beets for ruby pickles, French breakfast radishes for quick refrigerator jars, and turnips for kraut-style ferments. The front row grows the flavor infrastructure — a serious garlic strip, onions, fiery horseradish (whose root keeps pickles crunchy, an old trick), and a jalapeño for heat. July you fills jars; February you says thanks.

Benefits

  • 1Pickling cucumbers out-crunch salad types in the jar every time
  • 2Dill flower heads mature in sync with the cucumber glut
  • 3A horseradish leaf per jar keeps fermented pickles crisp — the old way
  • 4Root crops arrive in waves, matching a weekend-canner's rhythm
  • 5One season stocks a pantry shelf with pickles, kraut, and relish

Growing Tips

  • 1Pick pickling cucumbers at 8–10 cm daily; a day too long makes seeds
  • 2Let half the dill go to full flower — heads for jars, leaves for salads
  • 3Ferment in small batches all summer instead of one giant autumn session
  • 4Plant horseradish in a sunken bucket unless you want a horseradish farm
