How to grow Pluot

Pluots are complex plum-apricot hybrids with predominantly plum characteristics, bred by Floyd Zaiger in California for exceptional sweetness and flavor complexity. Plant bare-root trees in late winter, spacing 15 to 20 feet apart on standard rootstock. Choose a site with full sun and well-drained soil. Pluots require a Japanese plum pollinator such as Santa Rosa, Burgundy, or Flavor Supreme planted within 50 feet, as they are not self-fertile.

Pluots thrive in Mediterranean climates with warm, dry summers and moderate winters. They need 400 to 500 chill hours depending on variety. In humid climates, disease pressure from brown rot and bacterial spot increases significantly. Train trees to an open vase shape with three to four main scaffold branches. Prune in late winter to maintain shape and remove crossing branches.

Pluot trees are best planted during winter dormancy as bare-root stock, when the tree conserves all its energy in the root system and woody tissue. During this period the tree accumulates the chill hours it requires — typically 400–900 hours below 7°C depending on the variety — to break dormancy uniformly in spring. Insufficient chilling results in erratic bud break, weak bloom, and poor fruit set. Most pluot varieties fall in the low to moderate chill requirement range, making them well-suited to mild-winter climates where true plums may struggle.

Growing Tips

Pluots produce the sweetest, most intensely flavored fruit when maximum photosynthesis drives sugar accumulation into the ripening crop.   3. Pluots are intolerant of waterlogged or poorly drained soils, which rapidly cause crown rot and root suffocation. Plant on a gentle slope or raised bed if your native soil is heavy clay, and incorporate generous amounts of coarse organic matter and grit to improve drainage before planting. The bud union must remain above the soil surface at all times.
  4. Prune to an open vase or modified central leader shape, creating 3–5 well-spaced scaffold branches that allow sunlight to penetrate to the interior of the canopy. Annual thinning of crossing, inward-growing, and water sprout growth during late winter dormancy keeps the canopy manageable and productive. What is the difference between a pluot, a plumcot, and an aprium?
All three are interspecific hybrids of plum and apricot, but they differ in the ratio of their genetic parentage and in flavor character. A plumcot is an older, roughly 50/50 plum-apricot hybrid first developed by Luther Burbank in the late 1800s. A pluot is a more refined hybrid bred by Floyd Zaiger that is approximately 75% plum and 25% apricot in genetic composition — it looks and tastes predominantly like an intensely sweet plum with subtle apricot fragrance. An aprium is the inverse, approximately 75% apricot and 25% plum, and tastes predominantly of apricot with added juiciness and a slightly firmer texture than a pure apricot. Of the three, pluots are by far the most widely grown commercially and offer the greatest variety selection for home gardeners.
My pluot tree flowers every year but sets almost no fruit — what is the problem?
Pluots are self-infertile and will produce negligible fruit without cross-pollination from a compatible variety. The most common cause of poor fruit set is the absence of a suitable pollinator tree, or the presence of a European plum (Prunus domestica) nearby — European plums will not pollinate pluots. Effective pollinators must be Japanese plums (Prunus salicina) such as Santa Rosa or Burgundy, or another pluot variety with overlapping bloom time. Plant a confirmed compatible variety within 10–20 metres. Other causes include late spring frosts destroying open blossoms, cold or wet weather during the bloom window suppressing bee activity, or insufficient chill hours preventing uniform bud break. If pollination appears adequate, check whether your variety has received enough winter chill hours for your climate.
When do pluots ripen, and how do I know when to harvest?
Pluot harvest season spans from late June through to early September depending on variety. Early varieties such as Flavor Supreme and Crimson Royale ripen in late June and July; mid-season varieties including Dapple Dandy and Emerald Drop ripen through July and August; and late varieties such as Flavor King ripen in August into early September. Ripeness is best judged by a combination of signs: the fruit should give slightly to gentle thumb pressure at the tip end, the background skin color should have shifted from green toward its mature tone (yellow, red, or deep purple depending on variety), and the fragrance at the stem end should be noticeable and floral. Taste is the ultimate test — pick one fruit and eat it. Unlike apricots, pluots do not ripen meaningfully off the tree, so timing the harvest correctly is essential.
Can pluots be grown in containers or in small gardens?
Yes. Pluot trees on semi-dwarfing rootstocks such as Myrobalan 29C or Citation can be kept to 2.5–3.5 metres with regular pruning, making them practical for small gardens. In containers, select the most dwarfing available rootstock and use a large container of at least 60–75 litres with excellent drainage. Container-grown pluots require daily watering in summer and feeding with a liquid fertilizer every 1–2 weeks during the growing season, as they exhaust nutrients rapidly. You will still need a compatible pollinator variety nearby. Alternatively, some specialist nurseries offer pluot trees with two compatible varieties grafted onto a single rootstock — a 'family tree' — which solves the pollination challenge in a single planting.
Are pluots more disease-prone than regular plums?
Pluots generally show good disease resistance, inheriting reasonable vigor and resilience from both parent species. The main fungal diseases to watch for are brown rot (Monilinia fructicola), which affects ripening fruit in warm, humid conditions, and peach leaf curl (Taphrina deformans), which can infect emerging foliage in cool, wet springs. Brown rot is managed by removing all mummified fruit, ensuring good canopy airflow through pruning, and applying sulfur-based fungicide at petal fall in high-risk seasons. Leaf curl is prevented — not cured — by a single copper fungicide application at bud swell before leaves emerge. Bacterial canker can also affect pluots, particularly if trees are pruned in winter wet conditions; pruning during dry summer weather significantly reduces this risk. Overall, pluots grown in an appropriate climate with good cultural practices are not significantly more disease-prone than other stone fruit.
How do I store pluots after harvesting, and can they be preserved?
Freshly harvested pluots at peak ripeness should be refrigerated and consumed within 3–5 days, as they continue to soften quickly after picking. Fruit harvested slightly before full ripeness can be left at room temperature for 2–3 days to fully soften. For longer storage, pluots freeze exceptionally well: pit and slice the fruit, spread the slices on a tray to freeze individually, then pack into freezer bags where they will keep for 10–12 months with excellent flavor retention. Frozen pluots are ideal for smoothies, crumbles, and jam-making in winter. Pluots also make outstanding jam and conserves due to their high natural sugar content and the natural pectin from the plum parentage, which gives good setting without excessive added pectin. Dehydrated pluot slices make an intensely flavored dried fruit suitable for snacking, baking, and trail mixes.
