How to grow Moth Bean
Moth beans are exceptionally drought-adapted legumes from arid regions of India. Direct sow seeds one inch deep and four inches apart after soil temperatures reach 70 degrees. Space rows 12 to 18 inches apart. Plants grow as low, spreading mats six to twelve inches tall, covering the ground effectively. Seeds germinate in five to seven days in warm soil.
These heat-loving plants thrive in hot, dry conditions where other legumes struggle. They require minimal water once established and actually produce better in lean, dry conditions. Overwatering promotes foliage at the expense of seed production. Full sun is essential. As nitrogen fixers, they need no supplemental nitrogen and improve soil for following crops.

Slender, slightly curved pods develop from spent flowers, each containing 4-9 small seeds. Pods are initially green and fleshy, gradually turning yellow and then brown as they dry. The seeds inside swell and harden as they mature, changing from green to their final yellowish-brown color.
Harvest and Drying
Pods dry completely on the vine, turning papery brown with seeds rattling inside. The entire plant begins to senesce as the final pods mature. Harvest can be done in a single picking when 80-90% of pods are dry, or in multiple passes as pods mature unevenly over 2-3 weeks.

Harvesting Moth Bean
