About This Template

This is a traditional apothecary garden — the herbs your great-grandmother would recognize, grown for the tea shelf and the winter cupboard. The back row plants the immune and calm section: three echinacea (the roots and flowers of cold-season tinctures), valerian for the strongest sleep tea in the garden, tall elecampane for respiratory infusions, and motherwort. The chamomile block leads the second row — the single most useful medicinal plant to grow, since fresh-dried flowers make tea the shop version can't touch — beside lemon balm, sage for gargles, and horehound, the original cough-drop herb. The third row gathers marshmallow, self-heal, plantain (the first-aid leaf), meadowsweet, and skullcap, with catnip and mugwort closing the line. The front is the daily row: lavender for the pillow, three mints for the pot, hyssop, and more chamomile — because there is never enough chamomile.

Benefits

  • 1Grows a full herbal tea shelf: sleep, digestion, colds, and calm
  • 2Home-dried chamomile and mint outclass any shop tea bag
  • 3Most of the bed is perennial — plant once, harvest for years
  • 4Echinacea, chamomile, and hyssop double as pollinator magnets
  • 5Traditional remedy herbs are nearly impossible to buy fresh

Growing Tips

  • 1Harvest flowers at midday when oils peak; dry in shade, never sun
  • 2Label dried jars with plant AND year — potency fades after twelve months
  • 3Cut lemon balm and mints hard twice a season for tender regrowth
  • 4Research each herb before internal use, and consult a doctor alongside
