How to grow Arctic Kiwi
Arctic kiwi tolerates temperatures to minus 40 degrees, making it the hardiest kiwi. Plant in partial shade to full sun in well-drained, humus-rich soil with pH 5.0 to 6.5. Unlike other kiwi species, arctic kiwi performs better with some afternoon shade which protects ornamental foliage. Space vines 8 to 10 feet apart.
Both male and female plants are needed for fruit. Male plants feature striking pink and white variegated leaves. Train on a moderate trellis, fence, or arbor. Arctic kiwi is less vigorous than Actinidia arguta, making it suitable for smaller gardens and structures.

Rapid Vegetative Growth

Growing Tips
- Protect newly planted Arctic kiwi vines from cats immediately after planting. A simple temporary wire cage or cylinder of chicken wire around the plant provides effective protection until the stem has hardened sufficiently to withstand feline attention.
- Despite its exceptional frost hardiness in dormancy, Arctic kiwi is vulnerable to late spring frosts once active growth has begun. New shoots and open flowers can be killed by temperatures below -2°C in April or May. Planting against a south or west-facing wall provides both wind shelter and warmth that delays the emergence of frost-vulnerable growth in marginal climates. Keep horticultural fleece accessible for spring frost forecasts.
- Most Arctic kiwi varieties are dioecious and require a separate male pollinator plant to set fruit. When purchasing, confirm with the nursery that your male variety is known to flower at the same time as your female cultivar. The notable exception is the Japanese cultivar "Issai", which is self-fertile and can set a reasonable crop without a male partner — making it the ideal choice for gardeners with limited space.
- Arctic kiwi prefers a slightly acidic soil pH between 5.5 and 6.5. On alkaline soils, the vine will show yellowing between leaf veins (interveinal chlorosis), indicating iron and manganese deficiency. Before planting, amend alkaline soils with composted pine bark, sulphur chips, or ericaceous compost. - Train the vine carefully from the outset onto a robust support structure. Arctic kiwi is considerably less vigorous than common kiwi (Actinidia deliciosa) but will still develop heavy woody canes over time that require sturdy support. A trellis of tensioned galvanised wires on a fence or wall works well, as does a pergola or arch. Ensure the structure can bear at least 40–60kg before planting, as a mature vine in full leaf is heavier than it appears.
- Annual winter pruning is essential for maintaining fruit production and preventing the vine from becoming an impenetrable tangle. In late January or February while the vine is fully dormant, cut all lateral growth back to short spurs of 2–3 buds on the permanent framework arms. Fruiting spurs develop on wood from the previous growing season, so avoid pruning in summer or you will inadvertently remove the wood that would have borne next year's fruit.
- Feed generously but with attention to the seasonal balance of nutrients. High nitrogen feeds in spring and early summer promote the healthy vegetative growth the vine needs to build its framework. Check daily during the harvest season and collect fruits the moment they yield to gentle pressure — they deteriorate quickly once ripe and over-ripe fruits will drop. Any fruit that has fallen naturally from the vine is at peak ripeness and should be consumed within 24 hours.
- Arctic kiwi is an excellent choice for north-facing or partially shaded walls where many other fruiting plants would struggle. Where Arctic Kiwi comes from
Actinidia kolomikta — known variously as Arctic kiwi, kolomikta vine, or Amur kiwi — originates from the cold temperate and boreal forests of the Russian Far East, northern China, Korea, and Japan. Its native range spans some of the most extreme climatic conditions inhabited by any fruiting vine, from the snow-covered river valleys of eastern Siberia to the volcanic mountain forests of Japan's Hokkaido island. In these environments, the plant evolved as a forest-edge climber, ascending trees and shrubs using its twining stems, and producing its small, sweet fruits in late summer after a brief but intense growing season.
The plant has been known and used by indigenous peoples across its native range for centuries. In traditional Russian folk medicine, the fruits were valued as a tonic and energy food, while the leaves and bark were used in various preparations. Japanese and Korean foragers harvested the wild fruits from forest margins as a seasonal delicacy. Despite this long history of human use, Actinidia kolomikta attracted minimal attention from Western botanists until the mid-nineteenth century.
The species was formally described by Western science following the botanical surveys of the Russian Imperial expeditions into Siberia and the Far East during the 1850s and 1860s. German-Russian botanist Franz Josef Ruprecht provided the first formal botanical description of the plant in 1857, and it subsequently entered European botanical collections as an ornamental curiosity rather than a food plant. Victorian and Edwardian gardeners grew it primarily for its extraordinary variegated foliage, treating it as a decorative climber rather than a productive fruit vine.
It was Soviet horticultural science during the twentieth century that first recognised and systematically developed the fruit-bearing potential of Actinidia kolomikta. From the 1930s onward, researchers at the All-Russia Horticultural Institute and the Vavilov Institute of Plant Genetic Resources in Leningrad began selecting superior fruiting forms from wild populations, developing named cultivars with larger fruits, higher sugar content, and more reliable yields.
