Hot Sauce Pepper Garden
A 6×4 bed that grows complete hot sauce: twelve chili varieties across the heat scale, plus tomatillos, garlic, and cilantro.
About This Template
Everything a bottle of hot sauce needs, in one bed. The top row is the fire section, arranged roughly by Scoville count: ghost pepper, habanero, and Scotch bonnet for the fearless, cayenne, serrano, and jalapeño for everyday heat. The second row adds the flavor-first chilies — fruity Thai bird, smoky tabasco, raisiny datil — alongside the mild bodies (Anaheim, poblano, Hungarian wax) that give a sauce volume without punishment. The bottom rows grow the supporting cast: tomatillos and a Roma tomato for the base, a dense block of garlic and onions for depth, and a cilantro strip for finishing fresh salsas. Ferment, blend, or smoke — the whole recipe is here.
Benefits
- 1Twelve chili varieties span the Scoville scale from mild to ghost
- 2Grows the complete sauce recipe — heat, body, base, and aromatics
- 3Two tomatillo plants cross-pollinate for reliable salsa verde
- 4Peppers ripen in waves, giving you a sauce-making session every weekend
- 5One bed yields enough for a year of bottles plus gift ammunition
Growing Tips
- 1Wear gloves harvesting the top row — ghost pepper oil lingers for hours
- 2Let chilies turn fully red for hot sauce; green means grassy, ripe means fruity
- 3Slight drought stress in August concentrates capsaicin — ease off watering
- 4Sow cilantro every three weeks; it bolts fast in pepper weather
