How to grow Arnica
Arnica is a prized alpine wildflower notoriously challenging to cultivate in lowland gardens, as it demands the cool summers, acidic soils, and excellent drainage of its native mountain meadow habitat. Plant in full sun with acidic, well-drained, nutrient-poor soil at 30cm spacing. Arnica grows 30-60cm tall with lance-shaped hairy leaves and bright yellow-orange daisy flowers in midsummer.
The key to arnica success is replicating alpine conditions: lean, acidic soil (pH 4.5-6.0), cool root temperatures, excellent drainage, and no competition from vigorous neighbors. Use a mix of peat, sand, and gravel—avoid compost or rich soil. Raised beds or rock garden troughs provide the ideal planting environment. Water moderately but ensure roots never sit in moisture.
Arnica montana is difficult and slow to establish, but once happy it persists for years. Consider the easier-to-grow North American species Arnica chamissonis as an alternative—it has similar medicinal properties but tolerates a wider range of garden conditions. In either case, patience is essential, as plants may take 2-3 years to reach flowering size from seed.

Feed it well
Grow in lean, acidic, perfectly drained soil with pH 4.5-6.0. Mix peat, coarse sand, and fine gravel for an ideal planting medium. Germination
