Japanese knotweed should never be intentionally planted as it is one of the most destructive invasive species in the world, capable of damaging foundations, roads, and flood defenses. However, where it has already established, harvesting young shoots for food is an environmentally responsible control strategy. Identify established patches in early spring when reddish-purple shoots emerge from the ground resembling thick asparagus spears.

Feed it well
Japanese knotweed is remarkably adaptable and grows in virtually any soil type, from sandy coastal soils to heavy clay and even through asphalt. It thrives in disturbed sites, riverbanks, roadsides, and waste ground. The plant requires no fertilization and actually benefits from poor soil conditions that stress it and slow its growth.
