When to plant Pinot Noir Grape

Pinot Noir is propagated by dormant hardwood cuttings taken in late winter, not from seed, as seedlings do not reproduce the parent variety. How to grow Pinot Noir Grape

Pinot Noir demands careful site selection more than almost any other grape variety. Choose a south-facing slope with well-drained limestone or clay-limestone soil and good cold air drainage to minimize frost risk during bud break. The vines need full sun exposure but perform best in cooler climates where temperatures during ripening stay moderate, preserving the delicate aromatics that define this variety. Plant grafted vines in spring, spacing them 1.5 to 1.8 meters apart in rows 2 meters wide.

Train vines to a vertical shoot positioning system with a bilateral cordon or single Guyot cane. Pinot Noir grapes are not a storage fruit and should be processed into wine within hours of harvest to preserve quality. Keep harvested clusters cool in shallow bins to prevent crushing. For winemaking, most producers destem and lightly crush before a cold soak of two to five days to extract color and flavor before fermentation.
