How to grow Highbush Blueberry
Highbush blueberries are the most popular type for home gardens and commercial production, growing as upright bushes four to six feet tall that produce heavy crops of large, sweet berries. The critical requirement for success is strongly acidic soil with a pH between 4.5 and 5.5. Test your soil before planting and amend with elemental sulfur if the pH is above 5.5, working it in several months before planting to allow time for the soil chemistry to adjust.
Plant two or more different highbush varieties for cross-pollination, which dramatically improves both fruit size and total yield. Space bushes four to six feet apart in a row and six to eight feet between rows. Dig planting holes twice as wide as the root ball and mix the backfill with generous amounts of peat moss and aged pine bark to create an acidic, well-drained root zone. Set plants at the same depth they were growing in their nursery containers.
Mulch blueberries heavily with four to six inches of acidic organic material such as pine bark, pine needles, or wood chips. This mulch maintains soil acidity, retains moisture, and suppresses weeds. - Water deeply and consistently during fruit fill (the 6–8 weeks between flowering and harvest). Blueberries need the equivalent of 2–4 cm (1–1.5 inches) of water per week during this period. Irregular irrigation causes small, seedy berries and cracking. Drip irrigation or soaker hoses are ideal because they keep foliage dry, reducing fungal disease.
- Do not pick blueberries the moment they turn blue. Full flavor and sugar development takes another 3–5 days after the berry achieves its blue color. A truly ripe berry will fall into your hand with the lightest touch. Taste-test a few berries before committing to a full harvest.
- Prune every year during late winter dormancy — this is not optional if you want sustained high yields.
