How to grow Boston Ivy
Plant Boston ivy in spring or autumn in any reasonable garden soil, from full sun to partial shade. This vigorous self-clinging vine attaches to surfaces by adhesive discs at the tips of its tendrils and can cover enormous walls, eventually reaching sixty feet or more. It is the classic vine of ivy-covered college buildings and provides spectacular autumn color in brilliant shades of scarlet and crimson.
Boston ivy is remarkably adaptable and low-maintenance once established. It tolerates urban pollution, poor soil, and both dry and moist conditions. Water regularly during the first year to establish, then supplemental watering is rarely needed. Feed with a balanced granular fertilizer in early spring for the first few years. Established vines on rich soil rarely need feeding.
Prune in late winter to keep the vine within its intended boundaries, removing growth from windows, gutters, and areas where it is unwanted. Boston ivy grows rapidly, potentially adding six to ten feet per year, and requires annual trimming to prevent it from covering everything in sight. Growing Tips
