How to grow Lowbush Blueberry
Lowbush blueberries are the wild blueberries of northeastern North America, growing as a spreading ground cover only six to eighteen inches tall. Unlike their cultivated highbush relatives, lowbush blueberries spread primarily by underground rhizomes, gradually colonizing acidic soils to form dense, productive mats. They are among the hardiest fruit plants available, surviving winter temperatures of minus 35 degrees Fahrenheit and thriving in conditions too harsh for most other berry crops.
Plant lowbush blueberries in strongly acidic soil with a pH of 4.0 to 5.5, spacing young plants twelve to eighteen inches apart. They establish slowly and may take three to five years to form a productive ground cover. Patience is essential, as these plants invest heavily in root and rhizome development before producing significant crops. Water regularly during establishment but once mature, lowbush blueberries are remarkably drought tolerant.

Feed it well
Lowbush blueberries require very acidic soil with a pH of 4.0 to 5.5, even more acidic than highbush types. They naturally grow in thin, sandy, acidic soils and do not need rich conditions. Amend with peat moss and sulfur if your soil is not sufficiently acidic. Fertilize sparingly with ammonium sulfate or an acid-forming fertilizer in early spring. Slow establishment is the most common frustration, as lowbush blueberries may take three to five years to produce a significant harvest. Soil pH too high is the primary cause of failure. Birds and wildlife competition is significant since the berries are a favorite wild food. Weed competition is problematic during establishment, as the low-growing plants are easily shaded out. Use pine needle mulch to suppress weeds and maintain acidity. In managed stands, failure to mow every other year results in declining yields.
Growing Tips
- Soil pH is the single most critical factor for lowbush blueberry success — the plant requires a pH of 4.2–5.0 and will slowly decline and eventually die in soils above 5.5. Test your soil pH before planting and acidify with elemental sulfur several months in advance, as sulfur works slowly through microbial action.
- Never plant lowbush blueberry in soils amended with wood ash, mushroom compost, lime, or any other alkaline material — even small amounts of these can raise pH beyond the plant's tolerance range and are very difficult to reverse once incorporated.

- Lowbush blueberry spreads by underground rhizomes and will slowly colonize surrounding soil over years — plan for this spread by giving the planting space to expand or using a physical root barrier at the edges of the bed if you need to contain it.
