When to plant Trailing Blackberry

Trailing blackberries are propagated primarily by tip-layering and root cuttings. How to grow Trailing Blackberry

Trailing blackberries produce the most intensely flavored berries of any blackberry type, with complex sweet-tart notes and a wine-like depth that earns them a premium among berry connoisseurs. Their long, flexible canes grow ten to twenty feet and must be trained on a trellis system, as they cannot support themselves. Install a sturdy trellis with two to three wires before planting, and space plants eight to twelve feet apart to accommodate the extensive cane growth.

Trailing blackberries are floricane-fruiting: primocanes produced in the current year are trained onto the trellis and fruit the following summer on lateral branches. After harvest, remove all spent floricanes at ground level and tie the new primocanes to the trellis. A common training method is to fan primocanes along the lower wires on one side while fruiting floricanes occupy the upper wire on the opposite side, keeping the two cane ages separated for easy management.

These blackberries are best adapted to the mild, maritime climates of the Pacific Northwest, where most commercial trailing varieties were developed. They are less cold-hardy than erect and semi-erect types and may suffer winter damage in zones below 6. Growing Tips

  1. Install a proper T-bar or V-trellis system with two to three horizontal wires at 60 cm, 120 cm, and 150 cm before planting. Trailing blackberries are relatively drought-tolerant once established but inconsistent moisture during fruit development directly causes small, seedy, poorly flavored berries. Aim for 2-3 cm of water per week during the fruiting period.
  5. Apply a 7-10 cm layer of straw or wood chip mulch each spring, keeping it pulled back 10 cm from the crown to prevent rot. Mulch is one of the highest-return maintenance tasks you can do: it suppresses weeds, conserves moisture, moderates soil temperature, and slowly feeds the soil as it decomposes.
  6. Never apply high-nitrogen fertilizer after mid-spring. Excess nitrogen late in the season produces lush, soft vegetative growth that is highly susceptible to botrytis (grey mold), cane blight, and winter freeze damage.   9. Propagate new plants by tip layering in late summer: select a vigorous primocane, bend the tip to the ground, and peg it down 10-15 cm below the soil surface. By spring the tip will have rooted and a new plant can be severed from the parent and transplanted. This is the simplest and most reliable propagation method for home gardeners.
  10. In areas with hot, dry summers, plant trailing blackberries on the east or north side of a fence, wall, or taller crop where they receive morning sun but are shielded from the most intense afternoon heat. If you have to pull, the berry is not yet ripe. Taste is the ultimate test: ripe trailing blackberries have a deep, sweet-tart, wine-like flavor with almost no astringency. Underripe berries will be noticeably tart and slightly astringent on the sides of the tongue. Check canes every two to three days during harvest season as berries do not all ripen simultaneously.
Why are my trailing blackberry canes getting a reddish-orange powdery coating?
This is almost certainly orange cane rust, caused by the fungal pathogen Phragmidium violaceum or a related species. It produces bright orange to rust-colored pustules on the canes and leaf undersides. The disease is favored by cool, wet spring weather and becomes worse in crowded, poorly ventilated plantings. To manage it, remove and destroy all affected canes and leaves immediately rather than composting them, improve air circulation by thinning the training, avoid overhead watering, and apply a sulfur-based fungicide as a preventive spray in early spring before symptoms appear. Removing spent floricanes promptly after harvest removes a major overwintering reservoir for the spores.
When and how should I prune my trailing blackberry?
Trailing blackberry pruning has two distinct phases. The first is post-harvest floricane removal: as soon as the last berries have been picked, cut all spent floricanes (second-year canes that just fruited) off at ground level and remove them from the garden entirely. The second phase is primocane tipping: in late summer, cut the tips of the current season's vigorous primocanes back to about 1.5-1.8 meters. This stimulates the production of lateral shoots below the cut, and these laterals will carry next year's fruiting buds. In late winter before buds break, you can also shorten the laterals to 20-30 cm, which concentrates the plant's energy into producing larger, fewer clusters rather than many smaller ones.
Can I grow trailing blackberry in a container?
Trailing blackberry is not well suited to container growing because of its vigorous root system and the long trailing canes that require a substantial trellis. However, it can be grown in a very large container (minimum 75-100 liters) if you are committed to consistent watering and feeding. Container plants dry out far faster than in-ground plants and will need watering daily in warm weather. Use a rich, free-draining potting mix and feed with a balanced slow-release fertilizer in spring and a low-nitrogen fertilizer after flowering. The trellis system must be anchored independently of the pot. Container-grown plants typically produce significantly lower yields than in-ground plants and may need repotting every three to four years.
How do I prevent trailing blackberry from taking over my garden?
Trailing blackberry spreads in two ways: by sending up new canes from the root crown and by tip-layering, where cane tips that touch the ground take root and establish new plants. To keep it contained, train all canes onto a trellis so tips never reach the soil, and cut any cane tips that escape the trellis immediately. Install a physical root barrier 30-45 cm deep around the planting bed if you are concerned about underground spread into adjacent areas. Remove any suckers that emerge outside the intended area promptly while they are small. With a trellis and attentive tip management, trailing blackberry is easily kept within its allotted space and is far less invasive than many people fear.
