About This Template

This bed is designed to be eaten standing up. Every crop tastes best seconds after picking and needs no preparation: cherry, grape, and yellow pear tomatoes along the north edge, a curtain of sugar snap peas between them, and a snacking pepper on the corner with basil below it. The heart of the garden is a double row of strawberries — six everbearing plants that fruit in waves from June to October — backed by alpine strawberries that produce tiny, intensely aromatic berries all season in partial shade. A short row of finger-size carrots and a lemon cucumber round out the graze. Plant it along a path or beside the terrace, where passing traffic guarantees quality control.

Benefits

  • 1Everything is eaten straight off the plant — zero kitchen time
  • 2Everbearing strawberries fruit in waves from early summer to frost
  • 3Three tomato shapes and colors keep snacking interesting
  • 4Alpine strawberries produce continuously even in light shade
  • 5Grazing encourages daily visits — problems get spotted early

Growing Tips

  • 1Plant it where people walk past; a snacking garden off the path goes unpicked
  • 2Pick snap peas at finger length, before the pods get stringy
  • 3Trim strawberry runners weekly so plants put energy into fruit
  • 4Shishito peppers are mild — but about one in ten has a surprise
