About This Template

A smoothie habit goes through greens faster than any salad bowl, and this bed is scaled for it. The back row plants the heavy producers — three kales, a collard, and two chards — that shrug off cutting two or three times a week and regrow from the crown for months. Below them, a dense double band of spinach and baby spinach delivers the milder green that blends into anything. The strawberry row supplies natural sweetness (six everbearing plants that fruit in flushes all season), while the front row rounds out the flavor kit: mint for freshness, parsley for the brave, and a short block of beets — the roots go in the blender, and the vitamin-rich tops are a smoothie green in their own right. Blend within an hour of picking and the difference is obvious.

Benefits

  • 1Kale and chard regrow after cutting — one planting, months of smoothies
  • 2Homegrown greens go from soil to blender inside an hour
  • 3Strawberries and mint mean the green ones actually taste good
  • 4Beet tops ride along free with every root you pull
  • 5Costs a packet of seeds, replaces a shelf of bagged greens

Growing Tips

  • 1Harvest kale from the bottom up, a few leaves per plant per visit
  • 2Freeze surplus greens flat in bags — winter smoothies, summer prices
  • 3Young chard blends smoother; harvest before the stems thicken
  • 4Start beets with the greens: thinnings are the tenderest blender fodder
