Pod Development and Fill
Pods form from pollinated flowers and elongate to 12-15 cm, each containing 4-8 developing beans. Seeds inside transition from small and green to their full size and begin developing their characteristic kidney shape. The plant directs the majority of its photosynthetic energy into seed filling.
Drying and Harvest
Pods transition from green to yellow to brown and become papery and brittle. Beans inside harden and develop their final deep red color (for red kidney varieties). The entire plant yellows and senesces as all remaining nutrients are translocated into the seeds. Beans shrink slightly and become very hard when fully dry.
