The soil must be acidic with a pH between 4.5 and 5.5, rich in organic matter, and consistently moist but well-drained. Amend planting areas with generous amounts of composted pine bark, peat moss, and leaf mold to replicate the humus-rich forest floor.
Plant container-grown huckleberry starts in early spring, spacing them about three feet apart. Dig holes twice the width of the root ball and backfill with amended soil. Water deeply after planting and apply a four-inch layer of pine needle or bark mulch to conserve moisture and maintain acidity. Huckleberries establish slowly, often taking two to three years before producing meaningful fruit.
