When to plant Grapefruit

How to grow Grapefruit
Grapefruit trees need the most heat of any common citrus, thriving in USDA zones 9 through 12 with long, hot summers to develop proper sweetness. Plant grafted trees in full sun with at least ten hours of direct light daily. Space standard trees 15 to 20 feet apart, as grapefruit grows into large, vigorous trees reaching 20 to 30 feet if unpruned. Set the graft union three inches above soil level.
Water deeply and consistently, providing one to two inches per week. Grapefruit trees are heavy feeders requiring more nutrients than most citrus. The fruit hangs on the tree for months, often improving in sweetness through winter and into spring, so patience is rewarded with better flavor. Trees in cooler areas produce more acidic fruit with less sweetness.
Fertilize four times per year with a high-nitrogen citrus formula in January, April, June, and September. Grapefruit trees respond well to foliar micronutrient sprays containing zinc, manganese, and iron. Prune to control height and improve air circulation, removing water sprouts and interior suckers. Trees are frost-sensitive and need protection when temperatures drop below 28 degrees, especially young trees in their first five years.

Grapefruit trees are almost always established from grafted nursery stock rather than seed. Seed-grown trees can take 8-15 years to bear fruit and rarely produce true to type. Vegetative Growth

Ripening

Mature grapefruit trees yield prolifically, often producing 200-400 fruit annually. Fruit is harvested by cutting the stem with sharp pruning shears rather than pulling. Grapefruit store well at room temperature for 1-2 weeks and up to 6 weeks when refrigerated. A mature tree may continue producing for 40-50 years with appropriate care.

Grapefruit grown in cool climates produces excessively tart, bitter fruit due to insufficient heat units. There is no fix for this except choosing a warmer location or growing in a greenhouse. Fruit drop in spring is normal as the tree self-thins to a manageable crop load. Sunburn on exposed fruit occurs when canopy cover is insufficient. The most significant concern for consumers is grapefruit's interaction with over 80 prescription medications through furanocoumarins that inhibit the CYP3A4 enzyme.
