Grapefruit trees need the most heat of any common citrus, thriving in USDA zones 9 through 12 with long, hot summers to develop proper sweetness. Plant grafted trees in full sun with at least ten hours of direct light daily. Space standard trees 15 to 20 feet apart, as grapefruit grows into large, vigorous trees reaching 20 to 30 feet if unpruned. Set the graft union three inches above soil level.

Water deeply and consistently, providing one to two inches per week. Grapefruit trees are heavy feeders requiring more nutrients than most citrus.
