When to plant Giant Sequoia

How to grow Giant Sequoia
Giant sequoia is far more adaptable than its limited native range in the Sierra Nevada might suggest. It grows successfully across much of the temperate world from Britain to New Zealand, tolerating temperatures well below zero degrees Fahrenheit once established. Choose a site with full sun and deep, well-drained soil that can accommodate eventual massive proportions. Space at least 40 feet from structures, utilities, and other large trees.
Plant container-grown specimens in spring. Dig a wide, shallow hole and set the root ball at grade level. Backfill with unamended native soil, water deeply, and mulch with 4 inches of bark or wood chips in a wide circle. Water weekly during the first two growing seasons and during extended dry periods thereafter.
Giant sequoia grows 2 to 3 feet per year in favorable conditions and develops its characteristic columnar to conical shape naturally without pruning. The thick, spongy, reddish-brown bark becomes deeply furrowed with age and provides insulation against fire and cold. Lower branches may be removed for clearance but avoid heavy crown reduction. These are extremely long-lived trees that may grow for thousands of years, so consider the planting location as truly permanent.

At full maturity these trees can exceed 85 meters in height and 8 meters in trunk diameter. The trunk can contain over 1,400 cubic meters of wood. Growth slows but never fully ceases throughout the tree's lifespan.

Harvesting Giant Sequoia
Giant sequoias are not harvested for timber or food in landscape settings. Their primary value is ornamental and historical. Small oval cones 2 to 3 inches long can be collected for seed extraction or decoration. Cones may remain green and closed on the tree for up to 20 years, releasing seeds only after fire, drought stress, or the chewing of Douglas squirrels.
